As Kano State reflects on the tenure of its distinguished Commissioner of Police, now Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police, Mohammed Usaini Gumel, it is with deep admiration and heartfelt gratitude that we acknowledge his unwavering commitment, selfless service, and profound impact on the security landscape of Kano.
His leadership has left an indelible mark on our hearts and our state. From the moment he assumed office as the Commissioner of Police, CP Gumel recognized the complex security challenges inherent to Kano. He boldly assured his team that these challenges could be transformed into assets, and he steadfastly worked towards this vision. His leadership was characterized by a proactive approach, emphasizing community collaboration and constructive criticism, which became the cornerstone of his policing strategy.
Upon his appointment, CP Gumel took cognizance of Kano’s politically conscious and proactive nature. He made it clear to his management team that the Nigeria Police Force’s activities in Kano would always attract public attention. He convinced them to view this as an asset, not a challenge. Under his leadership, the police in Kano welcomed constructive criticism and worked closely with the community to address both real and emerging challenges.
One of CP Gumel’s most notable achievements was his success in addressing socio-economic crimes through a combination of kinetic and non-kinetic strategies. By engaging with the community, leveraging intelligence, and employing advanced technology, he significantly reduced crime rates, including armed robbery, thuggery, and illicit drug dealings. His approach to law enforcement was not just about maintaining order but about fostering trust and cooperation with the public.

CP Gumel’s leadership was especially critical during the Kano Emirate Crisis of 2024. This crisis originated from a prolonged dispute over the emirship, rooted in political and historical tensions. The crisis escalated dramatically in May 2024 when the Kano State Government reinstated Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano, displacing Aminu Ado Bayero, who had been installed as the emir by the previous administration under Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.
Sanusi’s reinstatement followed his controversial removal in 2020, which had been heavily criticized and perceived as politically motivated. The crisis led to conflicting court orders from the Federal High Court and the Kano State High Court. Justice S.A. Amobeda of the Federal High Court ordered Sanusi’s eviction from the emir’s palace and reinstated Aminu Ado Bayero’s rights and privileges.
Conversely, Justice Amina Aliyu of the Kano State High Court issued an injunction preventing the police and other security agencies from evicting or harassing Sanusi, thus allowing him to remain in the palace and exercise his authority.
Amid this legal and political turmoil, CP Gumel played a pivotal role in maintaining order and preventing violence. Upon receiving credible intelligence about potential plans to incite unrest, Gumel coordinated with the Department of State Security Service and other security agencies to enhance patrols and conduct house-to-house searches to preempt any disturbances. He also made public appeals for calm and compliance with the law, assuring the residents that the police were fully capable of handling any threats to peace. Through these proactive measures, including the deployment of additional Mobile Police personnel and strict enforcement of court orders, the Commissioner of Police ensured that the situation remained under control, significantly reducing the risk of violence and maintaining a peaceful environment in Kano State.
Another testament to his innovative and compassionate leadership was the transformation of notorious thugs into productive members of society. Over 220 influential youths, once embroiled in crime, renounced their past lives and surrendered their weapons. This remarkable achievement was facilitated by the support of the Kano State Government, traditional institutions, and the tireless efforts of the police command under CP Gumel’s guidance. These youths were offered scholarships, skills acquisition opportunities, and some even joined the constabulary to assist in crime prevention.
The story of Abba Burakita, a notorious thug who surrendered himself along with 40 followers, exemplifies the success of CP Gumel’s non-kinetic methodologies. Burakita’s voluntary decision to turn away from a life of crime and participate in the promotion of peace and security underscored the effectiveness of the police command’s approach under CP Gumel’s leadership.
CP Gumel’s tenure was also marked by his adept handling of the post-2023 Governorship Election period, ensuring peace and stability despite the heightened political tensions. His leadership during this critical time demonstrated his ability to navigate complex situations with professionalism and calm. Under his watch, the police command successfully managed the post-election period, maintaining law and order through proactive security measures and regular stakeholder engagements. His strategies led to the peaceful resolution of political tensions and the prevention of potential conflicts.
In his farewell speech, CP Gumel expressed his deep gratitude to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, for the trust and confidence placed in him. He also acknowledged the dedication and hard work of the officers and men of the Kano State Police Command, whose loyalty and commitment were instrumental in achieving their collective goals.
As CP Gumel transitions to his new role as Assistant Inspector General of Police, we salute him for his ardent commitment and selfless service. His tenure in Kano has left a legacy of excellence, inspiring both his colleagues and the community. His innovative approaches, compassionate leadership, and steadfast dedication have set a high standard for policing and public service.
We wish AIG Mohammed Usaini Gumel all the best in his future endeavors. May he continue to serve with the same passion and dedication that have defined his career thus far. His contributions to the safety and security of Kano State will not be forgotten, and his legacy will continue to inspire and guide those who follow in his footsteps.
Thank you, AIG Gumel, for your service. May Almighty Allah bless and protect you always.
