In July 2025, Dan Bello launched a campaign to expose dilapidated schools in Kano, an initiative lauded for bringing crucial issues to the Governor’s attention and prompting interventions.

Due to the poor condition of the educational sector, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, declared a state of emergency in education. This positive impact has also contributed to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf receiving accolades, including being named the best Governor in Africa. In Nigeria, even though he comes from an opposition party, he has been declared the best Governor. The Governor has been objectively receiving awards from various sources. I believe this is not a miracle but rather a result of his rewarding efforts, an achievement attributed to his tangible accomplishments in educational sector.

Dan Bello’s recent post on Maikwatashi schools has sparked significant concern. He highlighted the dilapidated state of the schools under the Ganduje administration, further alleging an attempt to sell a portion of the school property. According to Bello, the former Governor of Kano State received ₦400,000,000.00 but restituted after failed attempt. The neglect of the school over the past eight years of Dr. Umar Ganduje’s administration raises questions regarding Dan Bello’s silence during that period. Why now?

A significant criticism against Dan Bello centers on his perceived lack of balanced reporting. Journalistic ethics require presenting opposing viewpoints. Freedom of Information Act provides avenues for accessing information and legal recourse if denied. These principles are crucial for comprehensive reporting in activism. Despite these norms, Dan Bello made numerous allegations against the head of ACReSAL without presenting a balanced narrative, leading to public misinformation and defamation. The SR & SSR (Social Media Defense of the Kano State Government) discredited Dan Bello, presenting evidence to challenge his allegation. While the establishment of the SR & SSR is a commendable policy by the Governor, it raises the question of why they did not expose these issues through official channels earlier, which might have preempted Dan Bello’s criticisms.

While acknowledging Dan Bello’s valuable contributions when his efforts have been constructive, it is crucial to critically assess his reports for deviations from balanced reporting principles. As a political actor, his criticisms have primarily focused on Kano State Government-owned schools. It is hoped that his activism will expand to include federally owned schools.

In summary, upholding fairness and objectivity is essential in activism, even within political discourse.
